Hello Mike; i have lived here but in 3 different locations within the city of Colo. Sprgs. for now 52.5 yrs. from end of June of ' 57 until now. i lived 1st 3 yrs at Iowa St & San Miguel, then for 41 yrs lived at North Circle Dr & Maizeland near Wasson High. now since Oct of ' 03 located in Stattonmeadows/ South gate.. my statement is this. i do remember the old ' Alburequrque lows' , also the 4 corners lows, ect. we use to even in ' dry winters get at least one or 2 occurances of 7- 10 inch snows, then about once every 5 - 7 yrs there be a 15 - 18 incher occur. now since the winter of 97 - 98 i have not seen any of these occur, even here in Strattonmeadows the most i have ever seen since being here was only a paltry 5 inch. what has happened to these afore mentioned snow storms , has the climate changed here so much that none of those accumalation snow ever occur in the ' downtown area from southgate to North Circle dr anymore ? we use to even get ' quick 5 - 7 inchers from small local short wave troughs moving through, as well as from the 4 corners type lows, seems EVERY time the wind even breathes from the north , the snowfall is ' killed' , whereas i remembered we sometimes ' at Circle & Maizeland ' get a fair accumalation even on a north wind flow. seems this winter there has been a number of lows passing across to our south, some or few of which should have been able to dump a good accumalation of snow but did not. ended up only getting the little ' inchers ' has something occured that causes these lows to be ' different ' in their dynamics, or somehow they lack something they use to have in the past ? i consider myself as being good at remembering the storms of the ' past ' by the way the biggest snow i seen as a single , not spread over more than one day, was in Oct 1984, Monday night , Bronco vs Greenbay Packers, we / i did measure 22 - 24 inch at Circle & Maizeland from that storm, in 1959 Sept 28 - Oct 1 or 2 , there was 33in total over the 3.5 day period, with about 17in on ground at any given time. Apr of 1967 , again at Circle & Maizeland 13 in , with temps in mid 30's very strong N. winds , but overriding T storms , very heavy wet snow; Oct of 1969 strong N. wind / COLD - record cold , again 13 inch occured; 4 blizzards; Dec ' 73; Mar, 77, with drifts up to 8 ft. downtown had only minor snow from that one ; Dec 82, 8 ft drifts ; Oct 97 about 15 inch snow/ with some drifting; Oct 72; Halloween, 15 - 17 inch snow from SE upslope; here is a good one; Apr ' 74 Easter Sun early morning; in just 3 hrs , 14 inch snow from T-storms a very fast hard hitting snowfall most likely a very localized disturbance ; June of ' 75 3 inch snow, May of 78, 19 inch for a new record for that month, most likely a permanent record. ' 79, a 15 inch in late Mar, or early Apr. ; Jan & Feb of ' 87 a 15" & 17 " new records for each of those months, propably will stand forever. actuallly one that to me was more memorable than the Oct of ' 97 storm was the one that occurred in early Apr of that yr. 17 " of very heavy wet snow on a SE upslope, this was only few days after a 3 day period of very cold temps that ranged only from 7 - 11 or 12 degrees a very deep freeze in early Apr. that 17" snow i measured , i calculated near 4"of water content in it. it was indeed a very dense snow. there was one more smaller storm the Sun before Thanksgiving in ' 99 of 11 inch making that one the very last double didgit snow measurement i had seen, since then nothing more than 6.5 inch did i ever see, in fact that one was in Mar of ' 02 a very quick 6.5 " from a local disturbance, then really nothing afterwards, moved to present location at Stattonmeadows in Oct of 03, never seen anything more than 5 inch here. do you know if there are any records of what the snowfall occurances are for this area ? the south of downtown ? are the SE upslope snow falls forever dead ? , does the N wind always prevent any snowfall downtown south to my area ? that monster storm of Mar ' 03 that buried Denver & every where else north of here & SW of Pueblo under 3-7 ft of snow was a real ' bust ' here in the Springs ' from my understanding that what we experienced was referred to being ' dry slotted ' it was awfull. was that to mark the beginning of a new era that all big storms will avoid Colo Sprs? case in point, winter of 06 - 07 , twice Denver got up to 30 inch in a week , then of all places, where , who ever heared such a thing , Lamar, La Juanta, Springfield, Holly, ect was hit with 30 inch dumps while here we had only 2 - 3 inch.. why was that? that we here cannot get any of those ? not even any 7 - 10 inchers anymore? ... is it possible that global warming has radically changed the climate , changed the dynamics of the lows, disenabling them from having any affect on this area ? i like to know if you know if any sort of change has occured with our local conditions that has made it so the snows cannot occur here any more other than those tiny, punny little 1 - 2 inchers ? ... .. comments or responses would be most welcome ... jon
